Free Money Alert! - Get $25 Cash at ING Direct

Nothing makes me more excited than when I find a company that is just giving away money. It's a great way for them to promote a product or service, but more importantly it is a great way for me to add a little dough to my checking account. I've found one such offer this morning from ING Direct and they are giving away $25 FREE! Yippee!!

Here's how it works:

ING Direct is a pretty popular virtual bank that is offering $25 to any new customer that opens a checking or savings account by March 31st, 2010. You must deposit $250 into the account during the opening and as a thank you, they will deposit $25 immediately. You can of course than withdraw the entire $275 or keep the bank account open and use it regularly. They are only giving out a limited number of these free bonuses and they have given me 50 of these links to give away. Rather than post the link, I'm asking folks to send me an email requesting one of the links and I'll prompty email it to you. My email address is thepennyhoarder@gmail.com.

These links will go quickly so defintley try to email me as soon as possible. The best part about this deal is not only do you get $25, but I get $20 for referring you! :) It's mutually beneficial and a great way to help keep this site running.

I love bank bonuses and hope to be able to post a few more deals like this. Besides the free money, one of my favorite things about bank account sign-up bonuses is that they are completely free. I also love them because they don't pull a credit report like when applying for credit card sign-up bonuses. I usually will open my free savings acccount and than close it after I get the bonus, but I have actually started using my ING Direct account quite a bit. The account is free to use and you can set up automatic withdraws from your regular checking account to help you save money. Plus, the interest rate is pretty good!

Hope you like this one Penny Hoarders. Remember if you want a link, just send me a quick email -mailto:-thepennyhoarder@gmail.com.

Make Money Recycling Wine Corks

At my house there are two things that pile up quicker than I know what to do with them - pizza boxes and wine bottles. I don't know if it's because I'm a 23 year old college student or the fact that I just love pizza and wine, but they pile up quickly. And until recently I have been dutifully marching them down to the recycling center each week, but little did I know that I was throwing away piles of cash every week.

I haven't yet found a way to make money off the pizza boxes, but I have discovered that those wine corks and empty wine bottles can be sold for big money! Now we all know that in many states you can turn your glass bottles at the recycling center for a little bit of money. In fact, looking at the back of last night's yet to be discarded bottles reveals that Maine will pay 0.15 and Iowa will pay 0.05 per bottle. Not bad, but I've figured how to get nearly 0.75 per bottle and I live in Florida which doesn't have any bottle exchange programs.

Here's how it works:

1. Collect & Clean - Wine bottles will only sell if they have been cleaned out with hot water and soap. There is no need to take the labels off the bottles as a lot of the people who buy empty wine bottles are crafters and they may want to keep the label. You also want to save up your bottles until you have at least a dozen before listing them for sale. If your family is anything like mine that won't take too long...

2. Create Ebay Listing - Ebay is a great place to sell your wine bottles and corks. You want to split the corks and the empty bottles into two separate auctions so that you can make the most possible money. I have noticed that wine bottles usually sell in lots of 10 or 12. Auctions for wine corks sell in lots as small as 20 and as large as 500.  The wine bottles usually sell for about 50 cents each, but fancier bottles can fetch near $5.00 per bottle (hint: Cobalt blue bottles!). Wine corks, however, generally sell for about 10 cents each. Here are a couple of examples:

3. Send Your Bottles/Corks - Make sure you clearly list in your auction how much shipping costs will be. Wine bottles are heavy and you don't want to get stuck with the shipping bill. I recommend that you look at other auctions to get an idea of what people charge for shipping. Also, make sure you package the wine bottles up safely, because sellers are usually responsible for bottles that break when they are not packed properly.

Good luck Penny Hoarders!

Make Money Selling Coupons

Many of us are using coupons at the grocery store to take the sting out of the moment when the cashier hits the total button, but did you know that you can make extra money selling grocery coupons on Ebay?

As of this moment there are 33,060 auctions on Ebay for coupons. Examples include one seller who is selling her (12) Free Drink coupons on Southwest flights. Another seller is simply selling 15 coupons for Yo-plait frozen drinks. In fact, if you browse the coupon category you'll find that most are grocery coupons and some of them are selling for big bucks! One auction for a lot of baby formula coupons just closed for $96.01! Now, that took some serious work to gather enough formula coupons, but I have come up with some easy ways to make money selling coupons with just a few hours of work. I'm going to show you how to find the coupons that sell for big bucks and how to list them on Ebay.

I'm going to start backwards and tell you a little about how to sell coupons, because its important to understand how this work and what coupons sell before you start hunting for them.

First, Ebay offers every user five free auctions per month so we will get some mileage out of that, but also remember that auctions with a starting price under $1.00 only cost fifteen cents so we can keep our seller fees pretty low. Also a quick disclaimer before I move on: most coupons will contain language that prohibits them from being resold. You'll notice that Ebay buyers always include language in their listing that explains that the winning bidder is paying for their time to collect, clip, and ship the coupon and not paying for the actual coupon. Ebay requires that you include that language otherwise they may delete your listings.

Now, where to find all these wonderful coupons to resell???

Despite their decline in popularity, newspapers are still the number one place to find coupon inserts. Definitely save any coupons that you aren't using from your Sunday inserts. You should also check with friends and family and ask if they will pass along any coupons they aren't using. I've even heard of people engaging in some Sunday night dumpster diving to find discarded coupons. Not for me - but, by all means have at it.

At the end of all this coupon collecting it is time to list them on Ebay. It's common for Ebay sellers to sell their coupons in multiples of the same coupon (20 or so). One interesting thing I have noticed is that lots of only 12 to 15 coupons generally sell for the same amount as the lots of 20. Make sure you also list all of the specifications of the coupon in your Ebay listing (i.e. expiration date, exclusions, whether the coupon can be doubled, etc).

However, if you weren't able to obtain 12-15 copies of the same coupon you could list your coupons as a hodgepodge. In this case I would recommend you putting them in lots of 100 and advertising them like this Ebayer:

One final suggestion is that if you are serious about selling coupons I suggest buying coupon inserts online. One such site is Coupons & Things by De-De - she sells the entire insert for a fee, usually somewhere between 30 and 90 cents. I have had a lot of success buying coupon inserts from De-De and reselling the individual coupons on Ebay. She also has tons of individual coupons for sale you can buy for your own use. You need to make sure there are some valuable coupons in the insert before purchasing them. Usually coupons that offer a high dollar amount discount and coupons that don't require you to buy more than one of that item are the coupons that sell for the most money.

10 Ways to Make Cash for Tomorrow's Rent Payment

We have all been there before; Rent is due tomorrow and you are short $50 or maybe more... You could get a second job or do some online surveys, but those won't pay out for weeks. You need cash - and fast! If you ever find yourself in that position I have compiled a list of my favorite ways to make money quick. Enjoy!

Here are what I believe are the best 10 ways to make cash by tomorrow:
  1. Sell Plasma - It's pretty easy to do and most places pay between $25 and $40 for a donation. They will pay you in cash or cut you a check on the spot. Check out www.donatingplasma.org for more info and donation centers in your area.
  2. Pub Trivia - Take your favorite, local genius to team trivia night at the local bar and pocket some extra loot. Seriously, if you got some smart friends take advantage. You could win anywhere from $50-$200 for an hour of work. Some bars even give free food to the winners, just make sure you split the winnings with your friends. Try a Google search or TeamTrivia.com for listings in your area.
  3. Find a Gig on Craigslist - I love the Gigs section on Craigslist. People list work that they need done that day, you do the work and they pay you in cash. The gigs range from cleaning houses to mowing lawns. I've even been paid to drive people around or pass out flyers. Just take a look and email the posters if you are interested in working their gig.
  4. Clean Out Your Library - We all have a shelf full of books and cds that we haven't listened to since Hair Bands were hip. Take those to the local Half Price Books or second hand store in your community. I usually get a $1 per cd or book. If you don't need the money for a few weeks than you should sell the books online for a better price. My favorite is Cash4books.net.
  5. Apartment Maintenance - Call your landlord and ask them if they need any work done around the complex. Landlords always have little projects that need to be done and will usually be willing to exchange cash or a reduction in your rent for that month.
  6. Use the Free Section on Craigslist - You probably know that there is a Free section on Craigslist that people list stuff they want picked up. It's completely free and often times the stuff people are giving away has serious value. Some people just don't want to take the time to list an item for sale or spend a day having a garage sale. That's ok, because I don't mind. I have made thousands of dollars picking up these free items and then re-listing them under a different Craigslist category or putting them in my garage sale.
  7. Collect Bottles - This is so easy that I am amazed more people don't partake. Several states pay you to turn in bottles and aluminum cans. I was just in Michigan and they were paying 10 cents per bottle. Just visit the local college apartments on a Sunday and you'll find thousands of beer bottles. You'll be amazed how fast you start raking in the cash.
  8. Clean Out Your Garage - Most of us have a ton of junk in our garage that we haven't seen in years. Take a few hours to clean it out and then take your unwanted stuff to the local pawn shop. Or better yet, put out a few signs and have an impromtu garage sale. If you are going to have a garage sale I also recommend that you add your sale to Craigslist. I'm obviously a big fan and it costs nothing to list.
  9. Open a Bank Account - In an effort to increase deposits to their bank, a lot of banks are now paying people to open checking/savings accounts. The incentives range from $25-$200 and are available at quite a number of different banks. Make sure you carefully read the fine print, because some banks won't pay you until the account is open for 30 days or so, but I can usually find one that pays out on the spot. Bankbonuses.info is a good resource to find bank bonuses in your area.
  10. Take Your Old Clothes to Plato's Closet - This is a fairly new franchise that pays people on the spot for their old clothes. The clothes need to be in fairly good condition and they won't buy everything you sit on the counter, but I usually walk out of Plato's Closet with an extra $30 or $40. Check out their website for more info: www.PlatosCloset.com

Make Money Reselling the Apple iTouch

Good News Penny Hoarders! I made $187 this week reselling the Apple iTouch. I'm going to show you how I got bought these below market value and then was able to resell them at a profit on Ebay. I profited more than $30 off of each iTouch I sold!

I purchased these at Best Buy, albeit at a major discount and then simply resold them on Ebay. You could also resell these on Craigslist.com if you wanted to avoid the selling fees that Ebay and Paypal charge.

Just a quick note: I know that this process seems long and complicating. It really is not and should only take you about 20 minutes to buy the iTouch and list it on Ebay. I've written it out in a lot of detail so that it will be easy to understand, but I would be more than willing to explain any part that doesn't make sense if you send me an email or post a comment.

Here's how to do it:

1. Sign up for Bing.com - I've written about these guys before, because they offer 8% back on every Ebay purchase. It's 100% Free to sign up. You just need to click on the Ebay link on their site before going to shop in order to get paid your 8%. This 8% is going to come in handy for Step 2....

1. Buy a Gift Card to Best Buy on Ebay.com - There are tons of people selling their gift cards on Ebay. You can ususally get a substanial discount on gift cards to a variety of stores, Best Buy included. That's important because we are eventually going to purchase an iTouch at Best Buy for resell. Getting a gift card at a discount will help increase our profit margin. The gift cards sell at a 10-25% discount. Here's one recently completed auction for a $200 Best Buy gift card. The buyer got it for $160. If they used Bing.com they would have received 8% back on the gift card purchase making a $200 gift card cost only $147.20. I also used my Discover card to purchase which gave me 1% cashback as well on my Ebay purchase.

2. Sign up for MrRebates.com - I'm a big fan of Mr.Rebates. They give you cashback for shopping at a ton of different stores including BestBuy.com. Unfortunately, they only give 2% back on Best Buy purchases, but they also give you $5 just for signing up. This is going to make us about $8.94 in cashback rewards, because we are going to purchase our iTouch from BestBuy.com

3. Purchase an iTouch at BestBuy.com - Best Buy's website is selling the iTouch on sale for $183.99. This is the 8 GB, 3rd Generation iTouch. After taxes and Best Buy's free shipping the total cost is $196.87. Make sure you use your gift card that you got for only $160 on Ebay!

4. Don't Forget About Best Buy Rewards - Best Buy Rewards is free to join and will give you free Best Buy gift certificates for entering your rewards number during the checkout process. You can keep the gift card or, or course, resell it on Ebay for even more profits. In this example, purchasing one iTouch on BestBuy.com will earn you approx. $3.93 in Best Buy rewards.

5. Create an Ebay listing for your iTouch - I have had the best results listing my iTouch with a 3-day listing format. Also, start the bidding out at 99 cents to generate interest and keep your Ebay fees low. I have never had an iTouch auction ended unsuccesfully. It's just one of those products that always sells well.

6. Enjoy your earnings - I'm making an intital $25.37 off of each of these that I purchase and resell. I bought 6 of these last week and made approx. $152.22 for just a couple hours of work. I also have $18.87 left on my Best Buy gift cards that I purchased plus I have earned $23.58 in Best Buy rewards. Once I get my Best Buy rewards in the mail I will sell these gift cards for a total approximate profit of $35. That brings this deal to $187 in profit!! I've broken it down a little more clearly below.

The Math:
Cost of $200 BestBuy.com gift card =  $160
Bing.com Cashback on Gift Card Purchase - $12.80
Discover Credit Card Rewards on gift card purchase - $1.60
Cost of Gift Card = $145.60

Normal cost of Apple iTouch at BestBuy.com (including tax & shipping) = $196.87
Mr.Rebates Cashback on iTouch Purchase from BestBuy.com - $8.94

Final Cost of iTouch = $136.66

Average resell price of iTouch on Ebay = $175
Ebay fees - $7.59
Paypal fees - $5.38
Net payment from Ebay sale = $162.03

$162.03 (Ebay sale)  - $136.66 (Cost of iTouch) = $25.37 in profit!!

Congratulations if you stuck through this entire post. This process can easily be replicated with other items on BestBuy.com, just make sure you first do your research on which products can be resold at a profit. Not all products have a high resale value on Ebay. I'm making thousands of dollars simply buying products on Target and reselling them on Ebay and Craigslist and you can too!

Good luck Penny Hoarders!

Best Mystery Shopping Companies to Work For

I love to mystery shop. Well, I love to shop. So the fact that I get paid to shop makes it even better. For those of you who aren't familiar with mystery shopping it is a job where a company pay you to pose like a regular customer and then provide feedback to the company on things like how clean the store was or how well the employees interacted with you. In exchange for your feedback they pay you a fee and in most cases they will ask you to make a purchase and will reimburse you up to a set dollar amount.

I've been mystery shopping since I was 16 and have done many types of shops. I've been asked to pretend like I'm shopping for a car - took a test drive and everything plus earned myself a cool $60 for each dealership I went to that day. More commonly I'm asked to shop local grocery stores, fast food establishments, and restaurants. I'm usually paid $8-$15 per location plus reimbursement for my purchases. Usually I can make an extra $400-$500 a month in mystery shopping. You can, of course, make more if you are willing to dedicate the time.

If you have seen articles out there about mystery shopping before you no doubt know that there are a lot of scammers that are trying to take advantage of the growing popularity in mystery shopping as a second job. NEVER pay money to a mystery shopping company to join. NEVER pay money to a company to see their list of jobs. There are real mystery shopping companies that are free to join and I'm going to share a few of my favorites.

I have shopped for all of these companies and I love them! All of these are free to join:

Best Mark
Sinclair Customer Metrics
Check Mark Inc.
Market Force
Intelli-shop
Experience Exchange

After your application is approved, you simply login in to their website and then select the jobs you want to do. They provide you with all of the instructions and then after you have completed the shop you will need to enter your feedback into their website. Some pay via direct deposit, but most will mail you a check at the end of the month. Pretty easy, huh?

I'd love for folks to post in the comments if you have mystery shopped before and if you have any other companies you have worked for successfully.

Good Luck Penny Hoarders!

Make Money Writing for Associated Content

You've probably heard that starting a blog is a great way to make extra money. In reality it's not unless you have thousands of readers visiting your blog everyday. However, if you like to write and don't want the hassle of designing a blog and promoting it endlessly than you should try writing for Associated Content.

Associated Content is an online article directory that pays users to submit articles on virtually any topic. Associated Content is building an online inventory of articles to helps bring users to their site. They make money off of advertising on your article and in turn will pay the author for submitting the article.

Here's how it works:

1. You sign up for free at AssociatedContent.com

2. Write an article greater than 400 words and submit it for review. You can write about whatever you want, but they have some tips on their website for the type of articles that they pay the most for. For example, "How-to" articles are very popular. I recently wrote an article about free places to take a date in my city and it has done very well. I have even submitted old school essays and blog posts to Associated Content. I just reformatted them a bit and then watched as my hard work from college began to finally pay off.

3. Wait a couple of days. After submitting your article you have to wait for it to be reviewed and then Associated Content will email you and let you know how much they are willing to pay for your article. You can either accept the cash offer or turn them down and try to sell your article to another company.

4. Check your Paypal account. I've always been really impressed by how quickly Associated Content pays. Many times I have the money in my account within 3 days of submitting an article. They will also by my check, if you prefer, but expect it to take longer.

Some people are making serious money writing articles, but unless you can crank out 10-20 articles a day its probably just a way to make extra money. I usually get paid between $4-$7 per article, but some make people make even more per article. The basic formulas is: the better your article, the larger the cash offer. You also earn money for each visit that your article receives - $1.50 per 1,000 views which means most of my articles earn just a few cents, but every now and then I submit one that gets featured and will garner 1,000's of hits.

Another great writing site is Helium.com. They have the same format as Associated Content and you can submit your articles to both and then wait for their cash offer before deciding which site to sell your article to.

How to Get Cheap Stamps: I Just Bought Forever Stamps at .34 each!

Muhahahaha! That's how I feel about this latest deal I just found. I had no idea you could save on postage stamps. I know this is a money earning blog, but I had to tell you about this latest find.  I've learned how to buy stamps at only .34 each. I'm talking first-class, forever stamps and this is super simple.

Here's how it works: The first step is to get familiar with Ebay. There are hundreds of auctions on Ebay for unused postage stamps and like most Ebay products they are selling at a discount from their retail price. You can buy as little as a sheet (20 stamps) or you can buy several dozens rolls at a time. My advice is to buy at least a roll, because the larger the lot size the larger the discount. Here are a few examples of recently completed auctions. These auctions were for 200 forever stamps and the winning bidder got them for $75 or 37.5 cents each.

So, that's pretty good, but you can get them even cheaper by layering deals. Bing.com is Microsoft's new search engine and they are offering a promotion to help draw attention to their site. They offer cashback if you buy something from one of their advertisers. And guess what? One of them is Ebay and they give 8% back on all purchases!

To activate the cashback link you have to first click on the Ebay link through their website:

Scroll to the Ebay link and click. Then search for Forever stamps. Now in order to get your 8% cashback you need to make sure you are winning an auction via "Buy It Now" and you need to use Paypal as the payment. You can still pay via your credit card, but the payment processor must be Paypal. On a $75 auction you will save $6. And like all my deals, make sure you use your cashback credit card to save another 1% or .75.

That makes 200 stamps cost $68.25 ($75 - $6 from Bing.com - .75 from credit card rewards). These stamps are only 34.125 cents each. Awesome! Almost 10 cents saving on each stamps!

Earning Alert: Profit on Banana Republic's Clothing Sale

Attention fellow Penny Hoarders: BananaRepublic.com is having a sale. I smell resell potential....

Many of you know that one of my favorite ways to make cash is to shop the sales and then resell the items on Ebay or Craigslist at a profit. I sniffed out just such a deal today on BananaRepublic.com

BananaRepublic.com has a SALE section that allows you to browse for clothing items that they have put on sale.  I stumbled upon a 20% coupon for Banana Republic (use promotion code: BRSALE20) that starts to make their sale items worth purchasing for resale on Ebay. You have to be careful when purchasing new items to resale because not everything is going to fetch you top dollar. Remember: Ebay buyers are expecting to get a deal that is below retail value. It's important to use Ebay's completed item search to check out what that particular product has been selling for the past few days. Once you find a product that is selling on Ebay near or above the price as they are selling on Banana Republic, you might have a product worthy of resale. Here is one such deal I did this week:

Banana Republic has Women's white flared jeans on sale for $19.97. Two of those pair of jeans have sold on Ebay in the past week for an average selling price of $32. Bingo!

Here's how the math will breakdown if I were to purchase 3 pairs of jeans:

Cost of 3 Pairs of Jeans: $59.91
+ Cost of Tax: $3.36
+ Cost of Shipping: $0.00 (Free Shipping Coupon Below)
- 20% off Coupon: $12.00
Total Cost of Acquirement: $51.27

Ebay fees: $11.87
PayPal fees: $4.11
Shipping fees: Charged to Buyer
Totat Cost of Selling: $15.97

Expected Selling Price: $96 ($32 each)
-Cost of Acquirement
-Cost of Selling
=Total Profit (3 items): $28.76

It took me about 5 minutes to buy the items and it will take me about 5 minutes to create an Ebay ad for each item all for a profit of about $28.76. Also, to get Free Shipping you must sign up for Banana Republic's email updates - the link is on their home page. They will immediately send you a unique promotional code to your email address for free shipping on any size order. But, don't forget to layer to make even better....

Layer #1 - Online Rebates
Always get your online rebate when shopping online. In this case Ebates.com is offering 10% cashback on BananaRepublic purchases. Plus they are giving $5 just for signing up. Too easy...
Profit Added: $10.17

Layer #2 - Credit Card Rewards:
Always use your reward credit card when buying items to resell. It's make the deal that much better. I like to use my Discover card because I earn 1% back on every purchase and I earn 5% at select stores. Just make sure you pay off the card each month. In this case I'll use it to pay for the clothes at Banana Republic, pay for the shipping, and to pay for my Ebay fees.
Profit Added: $0.72

Total Profit: $39.65
Estimated Total Time: 30 minutes
Remember that Banana Republic's partner, Gap.com, is having the same sale so sniff out some resale items over there as well.

Good luck Penny Hoarders!
